Ramsay Street Party by Jackie Brygel

TV Week, Australia, 23rd April 2005

TV WEEK's Jackie Brygel scored an invite to Neighbours' 20th birthday reunion party

This was a birthday party unlike any other! The current stars of Neighbours joined forces with many former Ramsay Street "residents" to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the hit weeknight series. And TV WEEK was given exclusive access to the memorable bash.

Arriving at Global Television in an outer-Melbourne suburb on a recent Friday night, Neighbours cast and crew were directed straight to Studio A - usually home to Tuesday night variety program Rove Live. But on this particular evening, the filming studio was decked out entirely in Ramsay Street memorabilia, with giant television monitors playing a constant stream of Neighbours episodes from the past two decades.

Current cast member Ben Nicholas, who plays the teenage Stingray, was clearly having a fabulous time. "I'm just so happy to be part of the celebrations," he said. "People I used to watch and look up to on Neighbours as a kid are all here tonight." But at 20, Neighbours is three years older than Ben. "That's a very weird feeling," laughed the 17-year-old actor. "It's all a bit surreal," added Marcella Russo, who plays Lil Bishop. "It's just amazing to be here."

Nearby, former cast member Annie Jones - who played Jane Harris from 1986 to 1989 - was happily taking a trip down memory lane by catching up with many of her one-time co-workers. "It's great," she smiled. "I keep trying to move away from the entrance, but I don't seem to get anywhere because I keep seeing people I know!"

Daniel MacPherson, currently on our screens as the host of Ten's The X Factor, was also busy renewing friendships. Neighbours fans will remember that Daniel played the popular character of Joel Samuels from 1998 until 2002. "I've walked in and seen a dozen people I haven't seen for four years and I haven't even made it past the front door," he said. "It's absolutely incredible."
