Good Neighbours Celebrate 20 Years by Luke Dennehy

Herald Sun, Melbourne, Australia, 29th June 2005

It is hard to believe one of Australia's best-loved institutions, Neighbours, has finally turned 20. But that is exactly what has happened and the anniversary was celebrated last night with a cast party in the city.

Neighbours started on Channel 7 in 1985, but was dropped after poor ratings and picked up by Channel 10. One of the longest-serving cast members, Alan Fletcher, spoke on behalf of the cast and emphasised how important the Melbourne-based show was to the Australian entertainment industry. "Neighbours has been a fantastic local product," he said. "I hope you all share our pride for this wonderful, wonderful show."

The television show is one of Australia's most successful pop-culture exports. It is on air in more than 60 countries, including Britain, Uganda, Latvia and Nigeria. The show is almost as famous for its plotlines as it is as a breeding ground for young Australian music and acting talent. Countless stars of the show have tried their luck at a musical career, with Kylie Minogue, Natalie Imbruglia, Delta Goodrem and Holly Valance the most successful.

Guy Pearce, Jesse Spencer, Jason Donovan and even Russell Crowe can count themselves as part of the Neighbours history.
