Daylight Robbery by Jason Herbison

Inside Soap, UK, 31st December 2005

Ramsay Street’s Stingray Timmins and his brother, Dylan, have had some tough times but they must tackle their biggest challenge yet this week, as a face from their past returns to haunt them. As Stingray is held hostage, Dylan has no choice but to commit a robbery on behalf of their arch-enemy Roo…

“Roo’s the guy who Dylan informed on a few months ago,” explains Ben Nicholas, who plays Stingray. “He’s done his time in jail, an is out for revenge against Dylan. Roo knows that he can get to him through his brother, so he uses Stingray as bait and asks Dylan to come and meet them.”

Unfortunately for the boys, Roo sets a tricky condition for Stingray’s release. “Dylan turns up and Roo talks to him, while Roo’s cousin holds Stingray in the back of their car,” reveals Ben. “Stingray doesn’t really know what’s going on, but Dylan suddenly runs into a service station. Roo has demanded that Dylan robs he place so that he goes to jail, just as Roo did.”

Believing it’s the only way to secure Stingray’s release, Dylan reluctantly pulls off the robber, and the brothers are then dumped in the bush. However, it seems that their nightmare has only just begun…

“Dylan is caught on video by CCTV cameras, and he realises that it’s only a matter of time before the police come looking for him,” explains Ben. “His fingerprints are also on the unloaded gun, which Roo has given him. Stingray thinks they should go to the cops of their own free will and explain what happened, but Dylan disagrees - he’s convinced that the police would never believe their version of events, especially since he has a criminal record.

“Later on, back at the house, they see the CCTV tape played on the news,” adds Ben. “All the family are watching including their mum, Janelle. Amazingly, Dylan is unrecognisable in the footage.”

While Stingray thinks honesty is the best policy, Dylan refuses to let him tell anyone about their involvement in the crime.

“They just have to hope for the best, but both of them know that the problem isn’t going to go away,” says Ben. “Roo also has the gun, so there’s a risk of him handing it in to the police at any time.”

As the brothers try to stick together in the mist of their drama, Ben and co-star Damien Brodie, who plays Dylan, have developed a strong camaraderie.

“We got very excited when we read the scripts for this, because there were lots of action sequences,” smiles Ben. “The only downside is that Damien is much bigger than me, so I’m the one who ends up copping all the bruises!”
